Grinding Nemo - a film about fish meal

Published on Mar 29, 2012
You may already know that the tiger prawn is one of the world's worst environmental hazards. But did you know that it also has a lot in common with farmed salmon from Norway? Depleted oceans, ravaged ecosystems and human rights violations.

Follow us on a journey to Thailand and Peru, two of the world's largest producers of fishmeal, to have a look at the situation for yourself. And see what you can do about it.

Produced by The Swedish Society of Nature Conservation in cooperation with Swedwatch and Ecostorm.

Back From the Dead: Why De-Extinction May Save Humanity - NBC News

"Dirzo's research in Kenya indicates that as large animals such as elephants, giraffes, and zebras decline, grasses and shrubs grow taller and thicker, obscuring rodents from the view of predators and allowing their populations to expand. "In the absence of the big animals, you tend to double the number of rats," he said. The rats carry parasites that harbor a range of diseases, including black plague."

The scientists analyzed 1,478 genes from 144 species covering all the major insect groups to resolve longstanding questions about the evolution and diversification of Earth's largest and most diverse animal group." FANTASTIC ARTICLE READ MORE!

Welcome to Saudi Albany? - The New York Times

"Economists call this the resource curse — the perverse process in which a valuable discovery like oil, gas, diamonds or gold ends up enriching a few at the cost of impoverishing most of the population. At its worst, the resource curse leads to deeply corrupt regimes like those in Iraq, Iran, Myanmar and Libya. At its mildest, this can create one-industry economies in which there is little innovation and even less resistance to the whims of a handful of powerful interests. Many believe this already describes the oil economies of Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma and, increasingly, North Dakota, where the fracking industry is entrenched. Politically and economically, it’s hard to argue with an industry that has helped keep the state’s unemployment rate at about 3 percent." READ MORE & REAP

8 Shocking Facts About Sterilization in U.S. History

7. 1973-1976: 3,406 Native American Women Sterilized Without Permission

"The U.S government recently admitted to forcing thousands of Native American Indian women to be sterilized. The procedures even included 36 women who were under 21 years old, despite laws prohibiting anyone 21 years and younger from receiving the procedure. Dr. Pinkerton-Uri found that 25% of Native American Indian women had been sterilized without their consent. Pinkerton-Uri also found that the Indian Health Service had “singled out full-blooded Indian women for sterilization procedures.” In total, it is estimated that as many as 25-50% of Native American women were sterilized between 1970 and 1976."

Effect of aquaculture on world fish supplies

"Global production of farmed fish and shellfish has more than doubled in the past 15 years. Many people believe that such growth relieves pressure on ocean fisheries, but the opposite is true for some types of aquaculture. Farming carnivorous species requires large inputs of wild fish for feed. Some aquaculture systems also reduce wild fish supplies through habitat modification, wild seedstock collection and other ecological impacts. On balance, global aquaculture production still adds to world fish supplies; however, if the growing aquaculture industry is to sustain its contribution to world fish supplies, it must reduce wild fish inputs in feed and adopt more ecologically sound management practices."

Making Waste our Greatest Resource The Small-Scale Production of Food, Fuel, Feed and Fertilizer

"Making Waste our Greatest Resource The Small-Scale Production of Food, Fuel, Feed and Fertilizer Vietnam faces waste management problems of almost unimaginable complexity, and consequently this dynamic country must go far beyond the usual practice of burning or burying waste. In this paper a waste management concept is proposed that involves the integration of several well proven technologies such as mesophilic and thermophilic composting, black soldier fly and red worm bioconversion, duckweed water filtration, gasification and lactic acid fermentation. These technologies will enable Vietnam not only to solve its waste management problems, but also to transform many different types of waste into resources of great value."

UA Project Trains Native American High School Students to Build Aquaponic Systems | UANews

"A year ago, high school student Carlos Valenzuela had an idea for a project that would promote sustainability while also helping his community on the Tohono O'odham reservation.
Today, that idea has been developed into a partnership that teaches students from tribal communities to build aquaponic systems to expand the growth of foods important to Native communities.
In the year since Valenzuela's visit, members of the UA chapter of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society and theNative American Science and Engineering Program launched the Aquaponics and Native Seeds Project with $30,000 from the University of Arizona Green Fund, a program funded by student fees that allocates up to $400,000 annually to support projects that make the UA a more sustainable place to live, work and learn.
To date, UA students and employees involved with the Aquaponics and Native Seeds Project have trained 24 high school students to build aquaponic systems and grow plants from indigenous seeds, including "slow-bolt" cilantro, Yoeme basil, Hopi red dye, Jericho lettuce, arugula and Tarahumara chia" READ MORE

"Kavita Shukla has won the Lemelson-MIT Program's fourth annual high school invention apprenticeship. The 12th grader from Centennial High School in Ellicott City, Md., developed a new food packaging paper with antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Shukla, 17, recently won a U.S. patent for the paper, which uses the seeds of fenugreek, an ancient Indian herb, to preserve food better than traditional packaging. The patent was her second; she obtained her first for "Smart Lid," a lab safety device for bottles containing hazardous materials, which she invented at the age of 13."
